Your AirPods can be anywhere from 0 to 60 feet (or 0 to 18 meters) away from your phone to preserve the most optimal connection. This is the ideal range specified by Apple.

How can you tell if your AirPods are out of range?

The most obvious way to tell if you’re out of range is if your AirPods simply stop working. If your AirPods suddenly stop playing music or cut your phone call the chances are you are now out of range. However, it could also be that they are just dead and need to be charged again.

If your AirPods stop working and you suspect you might be out of range, try moving closer to your device to see if they continue to work. If they begin to work again, this means that you were out of Apple’s recommended range and you just need to move your device that they’re connected too, a little bit closer.

If that doesn’t work, your AirPods may have run out of battery. The next step is to check their battery level, to do this follow the steps below:

  • Grab your AirPods Charging Case
  • Open the lid next to your device
  • You’ll then see a pop-up on your device that gives you an overview of your AirPods and Case’s battery level

Another reason they might not be working is if they’ve automatically connected to another device. One of the common causes for this is if you’re in an area such as your home, where you have multiple devices that you use your AirPods with.

To fix this turn-off Bluetooth on your other devices temporarily to stop them from auto-connecting.

What is the difference between an optimal and maximum range?

Some of this might be a bit confusing to some users when we mention the AirPods’ optimal and maximum range.

The optimal range is 0 to 60 feet. This means you can be anywhere within this range from your device and still listen to music and make calls optimally without any interruptions due to connectivity.

The maximum range is anywhere outside of 0 to 60 feet. Although you might still be able to use your AirPods you may experience some connection outages.

It is also important to note that if you’re in an area with many obstacles it is highly unlikely you’ll be able to make it out of this range. For example: if you have gone to the gym and have left your device in a locker. You might not make it far before your connection drops.

It is ideal that there are minimal obstacles between the device you’re connected to and your AirPods.

Conclusion

You will be able to use your AirPods perfectly when they’re within Apple’s recommended range of 0 to 60 feet from the connected device. Although they might work outside of this range, it is likely that you’ll experience with some connectivity issues that you’ll need to address.
