Yes, there are Dementors in Hogwarts Legacy. But only briefly if you’ve picked a certain Hogwarts House.

The Dementors are among the most frightening and eerie creatures in the Harry Potter universe, adding significantly to the franchise’s early shift towards horror. Their cold aura and hooded appearance are evident indications of their menacing nature, and their ability to consume individuals’ souls and happiness make them truly horrifying. Fortunately, both witches and wizards can defend themselves against Dementors by mastering the Patronus Charm. However, it should be noted that this skill is not taught in Hogwarts Legacy.

Expecto Patronum is a spell that produces a luminous creature projection that is exclusive to the caster and is powered by positive emotions and memories. While Hogwarts Legacy includes numerous spells, some of which are more unusual than others, it does not include Expecto Patronum for a straightforward reason: there is no meaningful encounter with Dementors that would lead to combat against them. In fact, only one Hogwarts house in Hogwarts Legacy is exposed to Dementors, and there are no Dementors at the school. This is why Expecto Patronum is not included in the game.

Hogwarts Legacy has exclusive quests per house

At one point, it was thought that the player’s preferred Hogwarts house would not have any substantial impact other than the common room and dormitories they were assigned to during their schooling. Naturally, there is some cosmetic significance to this decision, with various gear skins displaying the colors and symbols of the chosen house. However, what many players may not be aware of is that each house in Hogwarts Legacy has an exclusive quest. This knowledge can only be gained by playing the game as a student in all four Hogwarts houses.

Although the quests are brief, they all share a common thread of seeking and engaging in dialogue with the ghost of Richard Jackdaw. For instance, in Hogwarts Legacy, Gryffindor’s exclusive quest allows players to interact with Nearly Headless Nick. Meanwhile, Ravenclaw’s exclusive quest takes players to Hogwarts’ Owlery, and Slytherin’s exclusive quest takes players to a charming grotto. However, the Hufflepuff house’s exclusive quest is distinct in that it takes place in a separate location that is not accessible on the Hogwarts Legacy map.

Meet Dementors in Hogwarts Legacy at Azkaban as a Hufflepuff

Dementors are conspicuously absent from Hogwarts, and the reason behind this is that they are meant to remain at Azkaban, a massive prison that towers over the North Sea. As guards of Azkaban, Dementors are not present at Hogwarts, which makes perfect sense.

In Hogwarts Legacy, it would be a letdown if players learned the Patronus Charm for a brief five-minute task in Hufflepuff and then never used it again. As a result, it is logical that the Patronus Charm is not available in the game. However, Dementors have been seen in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when they searched for Sirius Black, and in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, a mobile RPG.

It is plausible to imagine that Dementors might show up at Hogwarts or in the open-world Highlands of Hogwarts Legacy for a similar purpose. The game is already filled with magical foes and creatures, and having Azkaban as a separate mission creates a compelling reason to select Hufflepuff in Hogwarts Legacy, even if players didn’t choose it initially.

Although this unfortunately is not the case.
